Andrea zur Nieden talks on “Race as a Technology in Medicine and Epidemiology: Contrasting Germany and the US” at the 4S-Conference of the Society for Social Studies of Science in New Orleans:

The proposed paper intends to discuss how thinking race as a technology helps understanding the usage of visible and invisible racial and ethnic categories in medical and epidemiological research. Tino Plümecke talks on „Critical Life Science Research on Human Diversity: Social Reflexivity as a Means for ‘Good Science’” at the 4S-Conference:

My contribution focuses on the question of forms of reflexivity in life science research dealing with categories of race/ethnicity and sex/gender. In particular, I focus on projects that distance themselves from the common paradigms in the respective fields of research and use innovative non-binary and more fluid or context-specific categorizations of human biological diversity.
